One Year & Giveaway

***Comments CLOSED: 214 Comments***

Can you believe it?!?! I've been quilting/sewing for a year now.

The very first quilt that I made was for my oldest son Alex, who is now 4 years old (and he loves it...carries the quilt everywhere with him). I have to admit that the quilt isn't the best looking, a lot of the rows do not line up properly, but again, my first quilt. And the first technique that I learned was the "half square triangle" that Rachel (p.s. i quilt) taught all of us for the Pinwheel Sampler Quilt Along.

Another reason that the quilt may not look as great, is the fact that I didn't have a cutting mat or rotary cutter! That's right people....I used a good ol' yard stick and a pencil to measure out & cut my material, which by the way I do NOT recommend, and a pair of old scissors that we use for everyday cutting in the house, which i also do not recommend. I have to say I have come a long way...when you are going to sew on a regular basis, investing in some good tools is worth it, even if you have to invest in one thing at a time.

As you all can see I have come a long way in just a years time. I've finished 15 quilts and 7 projects. I also have 4 quilt tops done and numerous other projects started.

So, in honor of my one year quilting/sewing quest, I have decided to do a little giveaway. I thought you might like the sound of that.
How about a layer cake of Make Life by Sweetwater for Moda

Hi, Claire! Thanks for the giveaway. I love this fabric line.

I first started sewing several years ago and made some jewelry pouches for my bridesmaids. I kind of got away for it for a few years (except for hemming pants and that sort of thing). Then about a year ago I made my first quilt. I won a stack of Anna Maria Horner's fqs on her blog (why was I on her blog? I can't remember) and used those to make my first quilt. I've been hooked since then!

My first project was a fleece nine patch that I begged my grandma to teach me to make. She was a very impatient teacher so I didn't learn much. It was also the only quilt i've ever made on a machine! I taught myself the rest :)

My favorite quilt store is Stitch Lab here in Austin. They have Echino and Kei dots in person!!! I've only ever seen them online.

Congrats on your anniversary! My first quilt was, amazingly, a high school english project! I completed it over Christmas break. We were supposed to do a project representative of romanticism. It was actually a great experience with my mom and my grandmother. I did learn the proper cutting techniques right way, but she had to lecture me on 1/4 inch seams. Seems that I had this crazy notion that if I made the seams smaller, I could make the quilt bigger. So I would constantly "sneak" smaller seams. The quilt turned out fine though...and I got an A on the project!

And for fabric stores, I like the Fat Quarter Shop online... beautiful interface, beautiful fabric, fair prices, and easy to navigate. So many online fabric/quilting stores are made inaccessible by poor web design, but FQS is always a joy to browse.

Favorite store? As in single? I don't think it's possible! I've embraced internet shopping so much so that the UPS driver has my house key (not really, but it seems that way). I would have to say that hawthornethreads.com is a favorite because of discounting on yardage per order AND total for customer...but I also frequent fatquartershop.com, fabricshack.com, pinkchalkstudio.com, fabricworm.com and contemporarycloth.com. I've started to also branch out to independents and Spoonflower as well.

Is fabric shopping a hobby? It should be....I love the hunt!

Jen said...

here's my 3rd entry (out of order b/c I'm going to blog about this tomorrow!) My favorite fabric shop is fabricshack.com. They have great prices. I also like quilthome.com & hawthornethreads.com.

Great fabric! I can't remember my first project, I started young and was always hand-sewing little pouches out of fabric scraps to put 'stuff' in, and sewing lopsided clothing for my dolls :)

First project ever (as far as I remember anyway...) was a dress up princess gown I had to make because I found TONS of blue and pink satin in my mammy's attic. I was maybe 7 and sewed it all by hand because no one taught me how to use a machine. It was the most hilarious gown ever, with lots of poufs and lace and lasted pretty long! Needless to say, I've gotten much better :)

My first sewing/quilting project was a quilt for my MIL's 50th birthday, which is later this month. We are leaving for England tomorrow to deliver it to her and I can't wait!

Jenniffier said...

My first sewing project I did on my own (with out my mom holding the fabric) was a pillow cover for my baby doll. I was 8 or so, I think. But I have been pining and cutting fabric for dresses as long as I can remember. I always like to help my mom make me dresses. I am sure she had to redo them just as much as I helped. I didn't really start sewing on my own until just about now. It has become my way to relax and it reminds me of all the time I spent on the livingroom floor preparing patterns for my mom to sew.

Thanks for the giveaway! I love moda, it's my favorite fabric. Lets see I started in August of 09 and I made my littlest son a Thomas the train quilt. My first sewing project was a lap sized quilt for the back of our couch. Luckily, I had the help of a very experienced quilter, so it turned out alright. Since then I've moved away and have been more on my own. Now I see how much practice I need!

My current favorite fabric store is our local beverly's. As it is the best quilting fabric store I have found around here so far. It's a California crafting chain, but you can shop online too :). My all time favorite store is the Quilted Angel in Petaluma, Ca.; but I don't live there anymore.

The first quilt I did was a log cabin wall hanging. I was talked into doing a late night quilter. I was hooked after that. Keep up the quilting.

My favorite online store is Green Fairy Lady, or Quilts. I can never remember the exact name, but I see that you have her on your list already. She is here in Utah with me and I don't know if that makes the difference but I get my fabric from her fast! And she has AWESOME prices. Then a non online place is Walmart! My walmart still sells fabric and has a fabric section and I use it all the time.

I am now a follower. I first became interested in sewing when I was about 10. I made an purse out of an old pair of Jeans. Then I received a hollie hobbie sewing machine for Christmas. Then i took lessons in the basement of the old Singer Store near my childhood home. Then I stopped altogether. About 4 years ago I bought a machine. About 2 years ago I started taking lessons again. have made several garments and I am almost finished with my first quilt. Its a Crazy Short Cut Quilt. SO excited about that!

Lynne (Lily's Quilts) said...

Well my first quilt was made when I was pregnant with my first son, over 12 years ago - it was a copy of an old traditional Welsh quilt, very simple blocks in Amish style colours. It's been used as a family picnic rug ever since and is falling apart!

I made garments after high school, but that went by the wayside. I took a quilting class 25 years ago, and that was the start of my quilting passion. I never did finish that quilt, as we learned to make our blocks using scissors and templates. After using a rotary cutter and buying a Quilt in a Day book by Eleanor Burns, I never looked back :-)

My first quilting project was a psycho undertaking of a king size triple Irish chain for my SIL's wedding in May 2001. The individual squares were like 1.5" and it took me about 6 months to finish.

It was sooooooo long ago that I can't remember my first sewing project. I know I've been sewing since I was 6 and probably earlier! When I was younger I enjoyed making clothes because that's what I learned to do first. I do remember the first dress I made from start to finish all by myself. It was a very unflattering khaki dress that I loved. At the time I did not understand that khaki is almost THE single worst color for me to wear!

Hi Claire! My first sewing project was a scrap quilt, mostly using fabrics from my mother's big scrap box! Hand-marked with a pencil and template, hand-sewn and hand-quilted. I taught myself as I went. This was also 10 years ago, and all I can say is, the instructions available on the web now are WAY above and beyond what I had back then!! The recipient of said quilt still has it--it was a gift for her wedding, and she was thrilled, as neither her mother or MiL (both quilters) had made the couple a wedding quilt.

My first sewing project, after the basic tube skirts my grandmother used to teach me, was a black and white check flannel jumper. I was in the sixth grade, and I really did make it myself. Grammy took me shopping for all the elements, sat me down and showed me the basics of how to follow the pattern, and then puttered around in the kitchen while I worked. Her teaching method was to set me going and answer questions when I asked for help [another important lesson learned--ask for help when you need it!]. I was SO proud of that dress and I swear I wore it at least once a week for the rest of sixth grade!
Thanks for the chance at your giveaway, and congrats on one year!

Wow, thanks for an amazing give-away! My first sewing project was a nine-patch/snowball quilt that I made at a Quilt 101 course at a local quilt shop.I chose the most 'grandma' fabrics imaginable. But I am so proud of it!

I actually did start sewing in home ec in middle school but loved it so much I asked for a machine for Christmas that year. I was lucky and my parents bought me one even though I was only 13 or 14. I believe my first project outside of class was a 'purse.' I use that term very loosely as I folded a piece of fabric in half, stitched up the sides and added a strap. I've come a long way since then :-)

Ashley said...

My favorite fabric shop is Joann fabrics. I like that I can feel the fabric and see the exact color rather than relying on my computer screen. You also have the fabric right away once you pay for it. Oh yes, I love giveaways! My first project was a quilt that I began by hand with scissors and ruler and cardboard templates, much like you, it sounds. My MIL taught me the basics. I finished that quilt by machine, however, because sewing by hand was taking me FOREVER! I finished it right about the time of Hurricane Katrina, so I tied it off and sent it to a Hurricane Relief program. I hope that quilt brought someone some comfort and joy, because it certainly brought it to me while I was making it. And it was the start of a wonderful journey!

my very first project? hmmm...a halter top made with the sewing machine I got for Christmas, imagine my chagrin when my mother wouldn't let me wear it to school!! My quilting journey, however, began about 5 years ago when my Mom & Sis-in-law took a class and talked me into going along

My first sewing experience came just a few years ago when we needed curtains for the house we had just purchased. My mom and I stayed up late 3 nights in a row to get them done, before I had to return back home. Since then I've wanted to keep sewing!

1. When I was five or six I went to some kind of a day camp at the school where I was starting kindergarten that fall, maybe it was a preschool. Anyway I made a pot holder that I gave my mother for her birthday. I embroidered her initials on it thinking I was clever using her "maiden name" initials which spelled out BREW. She never used it but kept it until she died. I'm not sure if she was embarrassed or proud.

4. favourite quilt shop hmmm. Right now I would have to say Bear Paw Quilts in Whitehorse Yukon, the only one anywhere near me where I can go in and touch things - I shop online all the time but love to be able to see and touch what I'm looking at.

I'm sure I had some projects before this, but the first one I really remember was a flannel shirt I made while in college. Red and black flannel...although I think that my aunt did the button holes for me on her machine :-)

I made my first quilt after we were stationed in Germany. It took me forever to finish because I had a serious 'disagreement' with my machine which resulted in me getting so frustrated that I put it away for months. Thankfully I got a new machine and finished quilting it. Now I'm in love.

I kinda have two quilt shops that I really like. One is out in the country where I live, it is small yet has some items I can run over and pick up. The other is almost an hour from my house but it is pretty big and they have everything I could ever want!!! It is also where I just purchased my Viking from!!!

In high school I used to make bags for myself, not knowing that things like interfacing and fabric weight would help to make them sturdy. It was also a bag-making class that got me back into sewing again after 10-15 years away, but it's so addictive I didn't stop there!

I like stopping by Crafty Planet for my fabric. They have so much fun stuff! http://craftyplanet.com/
